During the First World War at sea, the British and German battle fleets confronted each other across the North Sea, as they would continue to do throughout the war. The British fleet operated from its bases in the islands and harbours at the northern end of Britain, and the German fleet was based on Germany's North Sea coast. In this the first major naval battle, that took place on 28. August 1914, the British sank 3 German cruisers and 1 torpedo boat in the Heligoland (Helgoland) Bight and damaged several others. The Battle of Dogger Bank 1915
 
The Battle of Dogger Bank was the second significant naval battle fought during the First World War. It took place near the Dogger Bank in the North Sea on 24 January 1915, between squadrons of the British and the German battle fleets. During the battle the old German pre-dreadnought "Blücher" was sunk with the loss of more than 500 men.
 
Following the Battle of Dogger Bank the two fleets did not meet again until the final and decisive Battle of Jutland in 1916. Read more.
